Description of Switch Gear

Switch gear is primarily used as a preventive and protective electro-mechanical system which enables short circuiting of specific circuits without interrupting the flow of the entire electrical system in the facility.  Switch gear enables the isolation of loads from the power supply. S.E.S. specializes in the repair switch gear and switch gear components such as medium voltage switches.  Often space heaters within a switch gear become defective leading to excess moisture. The excess moisture may lead to phase to phase or phase to ground faults.

Switch gears are designed to provide a means to provide power to a variety of circuits.  Often, switch gears are located in dirty or dusty environments.  Some switch gears are located outdoors and can be subjected to a variety of elements including moisture.  S.E.S. recommends planning maintenance outages at appropriate intervals such as 1, 2, or 3 year periods.  Switch gears contain the equipment which monitors and contains short circuit current and fault current.  The safety of the employees and equipment is directly related to containing faults.  By containing faults, explosions and fires are prevented.

Switch Gears and Circuit Breakers

Switch Gears and Circuit Breakers are not the same thing.  A Switch Gear may contain switches, circuit breakers, potential transformers, current transformers, copper or aluminum bus, meters, and other components.  Similarities between Switch Gears and Circuit Breakers:

  • Both carry and  Interrupt  electrical current.

  • Both need to be maintained and tested for proper reliability.
